Anti-Static Epoxy Resin Flooring for Electronics Assembly Plant

Project Overview

GSS Flooring was commissioned to install a high-performance, anti-static epoxy resin flooring system at SMS Technologies, an electronics assembly plant in Nottingham. The objective was to provide a seamless, durable, and electrostatically conductive floor to protect sensitive electronic components and ensure a safe working environment.​

Project Scope & Challenges

Electronics manufacturing environments require flooring that meets specific operational standards:​

• Electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection, to prevent damage to sensitive electronic components.​
• Durability, to withstand heavy equipment and foot traffic.​
• Seamless finish, facilitating easy cleaning and maintenance.​
• Compliance with industry standards, ensuring safety and performance.​

The existing floor consisted of vinyl tiles with residual latex and adhesive, which needed to be removed to ensure proper adhesion of the new resin system.​

Our Solution

GSS Flooring implemented a comprehensive flooring system tailored to the facility’s needs:​

• Removal of existing vinyl tiles and mechanical elimination of residual latex and adhesive to prepare the substrate.​

• Application of Sikafloor 156, a two-component epoxy primer, to ensure strong adhesion.​

• Installation of Sikafloor 220W, a conductive resin coating, to provide electrostatic conductivity.​

• Application of a 3mm layer of Sikafloor 262AS, a self-smoothing, anti-static epoxy resin, to create a seamless and durable finish.​

• Installation of earthing points and copper tape between resin layers to facilitate the safe dissipation of static charges.​

• Reinstatement and filling of all expansion joints with flexible polysulphide filler to accommodate substrate movement.​

The entire installation covered an area of 1,500m² and was completed within an 8-day timeframe, ensuring minimal disruption to SMS Technologies’ operations.​
