When the Cordwallis Group in Reading required a floor capable of withstanding heavy goods vehicle (HGV) repairs, they recognised that their existing plastic tiles wouldn’t do the job. That’s where GSS Flooring stepped in. We were entrusted with installing a highly durable, heavy-duty floor across their 500m² facility. And we completed it in just 11 days!
Out with the Old, In with the New
First things first, those old plastic tiles had to go. We used a ride-on tile-lifting bobcat to rip them up and load them into skips quickly. Once the bare concrete was exposed, it was clear we had some work to do. Years of oil contamination meant we had to grind the surface thoroughly to get it properly clean. Our high-powered Husqvarna extraction units ran nonstop to ensure every speck of dust was removed, leaving a perfectly prepared surface for the new flooring.
Building a Bulletproof Base
Then came the star of the show: a 9mm polyurethane screed. This material is extremely durable and designed to withstand heavy impacts. Once the screed was fully cured – we’re talking rock-solid – we re-established all the expansion joints. This step is vital to prevent cracking in the future, keeping the floor in top condition for years to come. To give the screed even more protection and make cleaning easier, we applied a UV-stable, anti-slip polyurethane seal coat. This not only protects against further contamination but also provides an essential anti-slip surface, which is crucial in a busy workshop environment.
Safety First!
Finally, we finished by addressing the essential health and safety requirements. We applied clear line markings around key areas such as the pits, rolling road, and the MOT Bay. This ensures the facility complies with all relevant industry standards and maintains a safe environment for everyone.
The Cordwallis Group now has a floor that is not only durable and easy to maintain but also fully compliant and built to last. It’s a prime example of how the right flooring can genuinely improve a busy commercial operation.
