Isle of Wight Cheese Co.

9 mm Polyurethane Screed with 100 mm Radius Coving

Case Study: Heavy-Duty Polyurethane Flooring for Isle of Wight Cheese Factory

Project Overview

Client: Isle of Wight Cheese Factory, UK
Scope: Full installation of a high-performance polyurethane flooring system
Area: Production and processing zones with heavy machinery and frequent washdowns
Objective: Deliver a durable, chemical-resistant, hygienic floor capable of withstanding heavy machinery, constant foot traffic, and exposure to water and cleaning chemicals, while ensuring safety and long-term performance

Challenges

  • Existing floor levels were incorrect and was prone to water pooling during washdowns, creating hygiene and safety risks
  • Flooring needed to support heavy machinery and high foot traffic without cracking or degrading
  • Maintaining hygiene standards required a seamless, easy-to-clean surface
  • Floor needed chemical resistance to cleaning agents and long-term durability in a food production environment

Our Solution

  1. Surface Preparation
  • Prepared existing substrate and corrected insufficient slopes using a resin mortar build-up around the perimeter to ensure proper water runoff
  • Ensured a level, durable surface capable of supporting production equipment
  1. Polyurethane Screed Application
  • Installed a 9 mm polyurethane screed over three days, achieving consistent thickness and uniform finish
  • Provided a strong, resilient floor able to withstand machinery, foot traffic, and daily cleaning
  1. Coving & Finishing
  • Installed radial coving with 2 mm stainless steel trim, 100 mm high, creating a hygienic transition between floor and walls
  • Applied a polyurethane seal coat to the floor and coving to enhance chemical resistance and facilitate maintenance
  • Introduced expansion joints to accommodate structural movement and prevent future cracking
