Project Description

Dorelbury approached GSS Flooring to refurbish the flooring of a worn and damaged dilapidation unit. The brief was to transform the existing, heavily deteriorated floor into a high-gloss, hard-wearing epoxy surface that would restore the unit to a clean and modern industrial standard. Over 33 days, our team successfully delivered a complete transformation, overcoming a series of substrate and structural challenges with precision and high-performance materials.

Preparation Process

The first phase of the project involved intensive mechanical preparation using state-of-the-art remote-control diamond grinders. This process stripped back multiple layers of old coatings and adhesives, exposing the original concrete substrate and creating a clean, keyed surface for the new epoxy system.

Substrate Repairs and Joint Refurbishment

A significant amount of remedial work was required prior to coating. All expansion joint shoulders had suffered structural degradation. To address this, we applied a high-build, three-part epoxy system to restore their strength. Once cured, joints were recut and infilled to allow for future movement.

Approximately 9,000 bolt holes, left from previously installed racking, were carefully filled and levelled to ensure a seamless finish.

Areas where walls had been removed were cut out and rebuilt using three-part epoxy mortar to restore floor integrity.

Epoxy Coating Application

Pumacoat WD was applied as a primer/sealer, penetrating and protecting the concrete substrate. After curing, a single coat of Pumatect was applied across the entire area, delivering a durable, high-gloss, and uniform finish designed to meet the demands of industrial use.

Outcome

The refurbishment resulted in a complete transformation of the space. The finished floor offers a clean, seamless, and highly durable surface that not only looks professional but is built to withstand ongoing operational demands. The high-gloss epoxy system also ensures ease of maintenance, making it an ideal solution for long-term performance.
