Horizon Honda – Moisture-Controlled, Slip-Resistant Resin Flooring for Automotive Workshop

Project Overview

GSS Flooring was commissioned to install a durable, moisture-resistant, and slip-resistant flooring solution for Horizon Honda in Bournemouth. The project required addressing high moisture levels in the new concrete substrate to ensure the longevity and performance of the new resin floor system.​

Project Scope & Challenges

Automotive workshops demand flooring that meets specific operational and safety standards:​ 

• Moisture mitigation, to prevent blistering and delamination of the resin coatings.
• Slip-resistant surface, ensuring safety for technicians and staff.
• Durability, to withstand heavy vehicle traffic and equipment.
• Low maintenance, facilitating easy cleaning and upkeep.

A significant challenge was the high moisture readings in the newly laid concrete, which posed a risk to the adhesion and performance of the resin coatings.​

Our Solution

GSS Flooring implemented a comprehensive flooring system tailored to the workshop’s needs:​

• Mechanical removal of existing floor coatings using diamond-bladed rotary grinders to prepare the substrate.​
• Application of a two-component epoxy damp-proof membrane to address moisture issues and prevent future blistering.​
• Installation of two coats of high-build epoxy resin, incorporating a fine quartz aggregate to achieve a slip-resistant finish.​
• Filling of pre-cut expansion joints with flexible polysulphide, allowing independent movement between floor slabs and preventing cracking.​

The entire installation covered an area of 280m² and was completed within a 4-day time frame, ensuring minimal disruption to Horizon Honda’s operations.​
