Case Study: Heavy-Duty Resin Flooring for Aon, The Leadenhall Building, London

Project Overview

Client: Aon – Corporate Kitchen Facilities, The Leadenhall Building, London
Scope: Full replacement of worn vinyl floors with a heavy-duty, chemical- and slip-resistant polyurethane resin screed
Area: All kitchen floors, including perimeter walls and drainage areas
Objective: Deliver a durable, hygienic, and easy-to-maintain floor suitable for high-traffic food preparation areas, while accommodating thermal expansion and providing a seamless, professional finish

Challenges

• Existing vinyl floors were worn, split, and no longer hygienic for food preparation areas

• New drainage system needed to be integrated without disrupting workflow

• Expansion joints required to reduce cracking from thermal movement

• Floor needed to be chemical- and slip-resistant for compliance with food industry standards

• System had to be fast-curing, solvent-free, and suitable for heavy-duty cleaning

Our Solution

1. Surface Preparation

• Removed all old floor coverings and adhesives using mechanical methods with remote-controlled diamond grinders

• Installed a new drainage system and prepared substrate for resin application

• Installed resin coving along all perimeter walls to improve hygiene and cleaning efficiency

2. Resin Application

• Primed all floor areas with Altro Resin’s polyurethane primer

• Applied 9mm Altro Crete, a heavy-duty, chemical- and slip-resistant polyurethane resin screed

• Sealed resin coving with a coloured polyurethane coat for durability and hygiene

• Cut and filled expansion joints with Altro Expand, a two-part flexible epoxy, including around all drains to accommodate thermal movement and minimize cracking

3. Finishing & Safety

• Completed floor provides a seamless, easy-to-clean surface

• Solvent- and taint-free system suitable for food preparation areas

• Slip- and chemical-resistant surface ensures safe and hygienic use under heavy traffic
